PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer capable of overwriting an updated part on a memory section only when an information content is updated in the information stored in the memory section of an ink cartridge, and a method of controlling the printer. SOLUTION: This printer 1 comprises a loading section for loading the ink cartridge 10 having the memory section 15, a writing/reading section 78 for reading data indicative of a quantity of residual ink in the memory section 15 to store it, a reception buffer for storing print data, a printing section for ejecting ink on a medium to be printed according to the print data, and a processing section for updating the data stored in the memory section 15 when the ink is ejected from the printing section. In the case where the printer 1 and a host computer are in an on-line condition, the printing section is in a non-printing condition, the print data is not stored in the reception buffer and the data in the memory section 15 is updated, the writing/reading section 78 inputs the updated data to the memory section 15.
