A vehicle pedestrian impact detection system has a hollow guide (10) fitted to a vehicle front into which ultrasonic or electromagnetic signals from a transmitter are coupled to a receiver to measure the propagation time and so determine the impact location with temperature sensor correction and phase locked loop comparison.
