<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a belt device capable of preventing a plurality of images from shifting in transfer position without impairing reading precision with time even in a dust environment due to toner. <P>SOLUTION: The belt device 2, which is laid aceoss a plurality of rollers and has an expansion surface, includes: a linear scale 15 which comprises a marking 15C provided on the top or reverse surface of the expansion surface in the moving direction of the expansion surface; and a sensor means 16 provided to read the linear scale 15.
