PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high radiance flash discharge lamp having high radiation intensity and a structure which realizes long life of the lamp. SOLUTION: The high radiance flash discharge lamp has a pair of electrodes 4 and 5 in an electric discharge envelope 1. A small diameter portion A whose diameter is smaller than inner diameter of a portion B where a cathode 4 is disposed, of the electric discharge envelope 1, is formed between the electrodes 4 and 5 in the electric discharge envelope 1. A surface of the small diameter portion A, contacting enclosed gas, consists of heat resisting material 8. Xenon gas only or mixed gas consisting of mainly xenon gas is enclosed at pressure of 1.3×10<SP>3</SP>to 1.6×10<SP>5</SP>Pa at room temperature. The high radiance flash discharge lamp is lighted with half current value width of 150μs to 2ms and at current density in the small diameter portion A of 2110 A/cm<SP>2</SP>or more.
