PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for accurately measuring the length of a long member, with low cost for equipment. SOLUTION: A driving device moves a touch roller to the position for the contact with the long member, by a rear-end part detection signal, outputted from a first detection sensor. A calculation device calculates the relation between the output signal of the touch roller and the length, on the basis of the output signal of the touch roller, since the rear end part detection signal is outputted from a second detection sensor, until the rear-end part detection signal is outputted from a third detection sensor and the separation distance between the second detection sensor and the third detection sensor; calculates the separation distance between the front end part and a fourth detection sensor, when the rear-end part detection signal is outputted from the third detection sensor, on the basis of the output signal of the touch roller, since the rear-end part detection signal is outputted from the third detection sensor, until the front-end part detection signal is outputted from the fourth detection sensor and the calculated relation; and subtracts the calculated separation distance from the separation distance between the third detection sensor and the fourth detection sensor.
