A compliant free-standing multilayer membrane is provided of the cross-sectional formula: <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>[(P<SUB>cat</SUB>-P<SUB>an</SUB>)<SUB>n</SUB>P<SUB>cat</SUB>/Met/(P<SUB>cat</SUB>-P<SUB>an</SUB>)<SUB>n</SUB>P<SUB>cat</SUB>]<SUB>m</SUB><?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> wherein (P<SUB>cat</SUB>31 P<SUB>an</SUB>) represents a bilayer of an anionic polymer and a cationic polymer between at least one layer of Met; n is about 1-50, m is about 1-10; Met is an inert metal nanoparticle; P<SUB>cat </SUB>is a cationic polymer and P<SUB>an </SUB>is an anionic polymer, preferably prepared by a spin-assisted layer-by-layer assembly on a sacrificial substrate layer.
