PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retrieval method for document data, and a program therefor, capable of reducing a memory size and a development time to a memory without depending on a size of the document data. SOLUTION: This retrieval method is a method for retrieving a final content corresponding to a structure type search key including an element name that is acquisition requirement from code data obtained by encoding the XML document data by use of a conversion sheet wherein a code corresponding to the element name or the like is prescribed. The code data includes the number of occupying bits in each element node, and it is decided whether or not the element name included in the search key is present in a parsing position by use of the conversion sheet, while sequentially transferring from the head of the code data to the parsing position. When the element name included in the search key is present, a parsing process is performed within the number of the occupying bits of the element name, an attribute and a child element node instance are generated on a memory, and it is repeated that the parsing position of the code data is transferred to a position wherein the number of the occupying bits of the element name is skipped over.
