<p>A hand-held fermentation unit calculates operating the optimum operating parameters. The unit has a pre-programmed electronic calculator for reactor volume load, gas yield and residence time, in relation to the quantity of substrate to be introduced to the reactor. The assembly has an electrical supply within a surrounding housing (1) with a display (2) indicating the type and quantity of substrate to be introduced, and the figures for reactor volume load, gas yield and residence period.
