<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a bactericidal composition containing a halogenated phthalaldehyde, and to provide a method for using the composition for disinfection or pasteurization. <P>SOLUTION: The bactericidal composition contains a specified diluent and a specified bactericidal compound having chemical formula 1 (X is a specified halogen). The method comprises using the composition for sterilization, the disinfection, and the pasteurization. The composition contains, for example, the compound in a specified amount effective for sterilizing at least 1×10<SP>6</SP>counts of Mycobacterium terrae bacilli when contacting with the composition at a specified temperature of 20°C within 1 hr according to a specified bacteria suspension testing.
