Apparatus for seam-welding layers of thermoplastic sheet material comprises a rigid or semistiff base or carrier 13 having a surface layer 15 of a heat-resistant barrier material which does not adhere to the plastic when softened, and an upper strip 16 of similar barrier material anchored to the base at one end at 17 and adapted to overlie the layer 15 along the weld line. The thermoplastic layers to be seamed, as shown constituted by the mouth of a bag 18, are sandwiched between strip 16 and layer 15 and seaming is effected by means of a hot tool, e.g. an electric flat iron on edge, moved along the surface of strip 16; alternatively an elongated narrow heating element may be brought into engagement with strip 16 along the weld line. Carrier 13 may have legs 24 and an adjustable frame 10 for supporting a bag being sealed.</p> |
