934,354. Reactor control rods. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. April 8, 1960 [April 8, 1959], No. 12548/60. Class 39 (4). A control rod consists of a dispersion of B or TiB 2 in a matrix of Ti metal; the B<SP>10</SP> content of the dispersion is preferably enriched, and a Zircaloy cladding is preferably added. Compacted masses of the dispersion are enclosed by frames and cover-plates of Zircaloy and the assembly is covered with a protective metal, e.g. a low carbon enamelling steel stabilized with Ti, evacuated and hotrolled, after which the protective metal is removed. The plate thus produced is cut, grooved and welded to form a cruciform control rod. Fig. 3 shows a control rod in which the central part of the. Zircaloy cladding is replaced by a Zr-Hf alloy or pure Hf, at 21. The dispersion is shown at 1. Specifications 767,892, 838,324, 838,442 and 903,580 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 838,442. |
