Machine tool has a spindle (5) that can be positioned in space using rods (21-23) supported on displaceable carriages (31-33). A correction device (6) is provided that determines the actual position of the spindle (5) relative to one or more reference points or relative to the workpiece. The correction device determines the temperature dependent change in length of spindle and mounting rods so that a correction can be applied. An Independent claim is also included for the method of aligning the position of a machine tool spindle.
