With the laser cutting head (1) in a test location, an alignment unit (8) is used to make the adjustments; it is arranged in the propagation direction of the beam. The alignment unit includes various components. Its fixture (3) locates the cutting nozzle. An infra-red conversion screen (4) registers the projection of the beam in an image plane (B) at a given focusing distance from the cutting nozzle (2). An evaluation unit is included.
