A communications system (12, figure 1) comprises a plurality of communications units 14 fixedly mounted onboard an airplane (10, figure 1), each communication unit 14 being adapted to be operated by an associated passenger to perform scanning functions, whereby each communication unit 14 comprises a scanner 50 adapted to scan a document and display a scanned image of the document on a video screen 24, at least one processor (66, figure 4) operatively connected to the scanner 50 and the video screen 24 and at least one remote connection device (68, figure 4) adapted to connect each of the communications units 14 to a remote location. The communication units 14 may be mounted within seatbacks. Each unit may feature a video screen 24. There may be provided a central processing unit (70, figure 5) operatively connected to the communication units 14. The processor (66, 72, figures 4 and 5) and remote connection device (68, 74, figures 4 and 5) may be located within the central processing unit (70, figure 5) or within each of the communication units 14. The remote connection device (68, figure 4) may enable the communication units 14 to connect to the internet. Each of the communication units 14 may feature a PC connection device to connect the scanner to a passengers laptop. |
