PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal aligning agent being highly capable of aligning a liquid crystal and giving a large pretilt angle by using a polymide containing a specified chemical structure as the resin component. SOLUTION: This agent contains a polyimide containing a chemical structure represented by formula I (wherein N is 1-10; and R1 and R2 are each methyl, ethyl or phenyl) as the resin component. For example, this is obtained by reacting 1,3-bis(3-aminopropylmethylsilyl)benzene with a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride in a polar solvent to form a polyamic acid and imidating the polymic acid by dehydration. Because most polyimides are insoluble in solvents, it is necessary to use a selected tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride. The polar solvent in which the polymerization for obtaining the polyimide is performed is exemplified by N-methylpyrrolidone. The agent comprises a resin component and a solvent component, which is desirablyγ-butyrolactone, aγ-butyrolactone/ butyl-Cellosolve mixture or the like. |
