A receiver is synchronised to a received ultra wideband (UWB) signal r(t) having a known hopping code. A parameter of the received signal, such as a correlation 1 of the received signal r(t) with a generated template signal 6, is determined in a number of time slots. The parameter associated with each time slot is added 14 to one of a number of corresponding time and code offset accumulators. The code and time offset accumulator having an accumulated value according to a predetermined accumulator metric, preferably the largest value, is determined to provide the time and code offset required to synchronise the receiver. The invention may be used in various UWB applications, such as radar, position tracking and communications, and specifically in ground penetrating radar (GPR) and wireless personal area networks (WPAN). |
