Selecting a catalyst for a target reaction from a library of catalysts comprises testing the activity of a catalyst with respect to a reaction mixture containing a reactivity probe comprising a reaction motif capable of undergoing the target reaction, analyzing the reaction mixture to characterize the compounds formed, repeating the above steps for other catalysts from the library, and comparing the analysis results to identify a catalyst with the required activity. Selecting a catalyst for a target reaction from a library of catalysts comprises: (i) testing the activity of a catalyst with respect to a reaction mixture containing a reactivity probe comprising a reaction motif capable of undergoing the target reaction; (ii) analyzing the reaction mixture to characterize qualitatively and/or quantitatively the compounds formed; (iii) repeating the test and analysis steps for other catalysts from the library; and (iv) comparing the analysis results to identify a catalyst with the required activity with respect to the target reaction. An independent claim is also included for characterizing a catalytic application of a catalyst by: (a) testing the activity of a catalyst with respect to a reaction mixture containing a series of reactivity probes, each comprising a reaction motif capable of reacting with another reaction motif; (b) analyzing the reaction mixture to characterize qualitatively and/or quantitatively the compounds formed; (c) repeating the test and analysis steps for other catalysts; (d) comparing the analysis results to distinguish data specific to each analysis from common data: (e) characterizing the compounds corresponding to the specific data; and (f) qualitatively and/or quantitatively characterizing the activity of the corresponding catalysts.
