A large diameter check valve (10) has an upstream inlet part (16) mountable on a discharge end of a conduit, a downstream outlet part (24) adapted to prevent backflow of fluid through the check valve, and a transition part (18) located between the upstream inlet part and the downstream outlet part. A support (20) is included in the check valve to prevent drooping of the check valve via a cantilever effect. A method for supporting a check valve is also disclosed. <IMAGE>
