A fuel element in a vertical channel of a nuclear reactor is surrounded by a shell 6 having an internal ledge on which rest fuel element fins 3 and a part having a conical opening and indentations into which the fins fit. The part may be integral with the shell or may be separate as shown at 5 and 11. The shell has an extension 7 and a spherical bearing surface 8 to engage adjacent shells, and a groove 9 for engagement by a discharging device. The shell is graphite, the fuel uranium sheathed in Mg or Al. This type of support may also be used for irradiating specimens. |
