Solvents for polyesters of the types given below comprise 85-95% by weight of phenol and 5-15% by weight of water, resorcinol or chloralamide. The polyesters are:-(1) derived from at least one dicarboxylic acid and at least one glycol of the series HO(CH2)n,OH, where n is 2-10; (2) type (1) modified either by a compound of the formula:- <FORM:0866220/IV (a)/1> where R is alkyl of 1-4C, m and n are integers from 2 to 22, and x is a positive integer, or by polyvinyl methyl ether having a single terminal OH group; and (3) type (2) further modified either by a compound of the formula:- <FORM:0866220/IV (a)/2> where R, R1 and R11 are alkyl of 1-3C and R111 is H or alkyl of 1-2C, or by a compound of the formula:- <FORM:0866220/IV (a)/3> where R is a saturated aliphatic or a cycloaliphatic radical of 3-6C and n is an integer greater than 2. The preferred polyester of type (1) is polyethylene terephthalate; other dicarboxylic acids which are listed are isophthalic, oxalic, p HOOC,(CH2)n,COOH where n is 2-8, p-carboxyphenoxy alkanoic acids, p, p1-dicarboxybisphenyl compounds, 3-alkyl, 4-(b -carboxy ethoxy) benzoic, and HOOC,(CH2)n-(O CH2 CH2O)-(CH2)n,COOH where n is 1-4. Specified modifiers of type (2) are methoxy-, propoxy- and ethoxy polyethylene glycols, and polyvinylmethyl ether. Specified modifiers of type (3) are trimethyl and tripropyl trimesate, and glycerol, pentaerythritol, sorbitol and mannitol. Examples are given. Uses. Ribbons, films, bristles, fibres, filaments, lacquers and coating, e.g. textile fabrics, metals, paper and films. Specification 847,090 is referred to. |
