In a mechanical handling process to pass a heavy and elongated roll or block of paper to the next production stage, the roll or block (13) is sub-divided during the previous production stage. In the first stage the elongated roll or block is advanced in discrete steps onto the mechanical handling or conveyer unit, where it is subdivided into two or more units. The sub-divided rolls or blocks are then removed on the mechanical handling or conveyer unit under manual or automatic control. The sub-divided rolls or blocks are then advanced to the next production stage e.g. a packing machine. The sub-division process reduces each roll or block to the dimensions required in the packing process. Also claimed is a commensurate sub-division and mechanical handling assembly in which the elongated and sub-divided product is presented and moved transverse to its main axis.
