The web coating applicator station (12) has applicators (12a,12b) flanking a moving web (10), of paper or cardboard, to apply a liquid or paste coating on both sides of it. Sensors (14,16) are linked to a decision unit (20,22) which determines the coating volume to be used to cover the web surfaces, using the differences in their signals for web gloss and/or whiteness. A delegation unit (K) gives the values to spread an even coating on both sides of the web.
