A buttonhole sewing machine has an x/y sewing surface (9) with a variable-position X-plane fabric work piece clamp (11) shifted by a pneumatic piston and cylinder unit linked by a push-fit detachable connector (32) to a compressed air line (28). The compressed air line connector has freedom of movement in the x and y planes. The connector (32) has a conical cross section (36) and is co-located with the clamp drive (20).
