Diphosphine of formula I <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>R<SUP>1</SUP>R<SUP>2</SUP>P-H<SUB>2</SUB>C-Ar-CH<SUB>2</SUB>PR<SUP>1</SUP>R<SUP>2</SUP> (I)<?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> are prepared by a process that comprises a) reacting a dimethyl compound of formula II <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>H<SUB>3</SUB>C-Ar-CH<SUB>3</SUB> (II)<?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> with a base and an N-substituted aminophosphorous halide to form bis(aminophosphinomethyl) compound of the formula III <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>R<SUP>3</SUP>R<SUP>4</SUP>P-H<SUB>2</SUB>C-Ar-CH<SUB>2</SUB>-PR<SUP>3</SUP>R<SUP>4</SUP> (III)<?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> b) reacting the compound of formula III with HCl to form bis(dichlorophosphinomethyl) compound of formula IV <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>Cl<SUB>2</SUB>P-H<SUB>2</SUB>C-Ar-CH<SUB>2</SUB>-PCl<SUB>2</SUB> (IV)<?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> and c) reacting the compound of formula IV with an organometallic reagent to give the product compound of formula I, wherein groups R<SUP>1 </SUP>and R<SUP>2 </SUP>are each, independently of one another, a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic, heteroaromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon group and may have a covalent bond connecting them and Ar is a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic or heteroaromatic hydrocarbon group an R<SUP>3 </SUP>and R<SUP>4 </SUP>are each, independently of one another, an N-substituted alkylamino or arylamino group. |
