A bait container having one or more sections for the slow release of bait, which are separated by layers of water soluble material. In use, the bait containe r is lowered into the water, having at least one section for the bait accessible to the catch. The water soluble material then degrades over a period of time, permitting at least another section of bait to become accessible to the catch. In this manner, the water soluble material between the bait acts as a timed release, allowing the bait to fish longer. The unit can be placed in the water for long term fishing, or a peel back tab can be removed from the bait container so as to provide for the immediate release of the bait. The invention therefore provides a means to prolong the useful life of the bait, particularly bait f or crustaceans such as lobsters and crabs.
