An anhydrous waste product comprising a phosphate is mixed with an anhydrous waste product comprising calcium to form a mixture containing ettringite minerals and then water is added to this mixture. Binding waste products generated by an combustion process comprises: (1) mixing a substantially anhydrous waste product comprising a phosphate with a substantially anhydrous waste product comprising calcium to form a substantially anhydrous mixture containing ettringite minerals which contain halides, at least one of these waste productions optionally comprising a sulfate; and (2) mixing the mixture with at least 7 wt.% water, w.r.t the dry solids content of the phosphate and/or sulfate-containing waste product. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a binder prepared by the above process and containing waste incinerator ash; (b) immobilizing an inorganic waste material comprising a heavy metal, by mixing the waste with this binder and adding water to the mixture in order to obtain a water content 17-30 wt.% w.r.t the dry solids content of the phosphate; and (c) waste materials immobilized by the process, containing C2 class impurities or containing an impurity chosen from at least one heavy metal, sulfate or halide. |
