A current transformer for metering alternating current that comprises: (a) A primary circuit, which is formed of at least one primary current conductor having an output branch, a return branch and a current loop connecting these; and (b) A secondary circuit formed of at least one gradiometer of at least the second order and formed in at least one conducting layer of a printed circuit board. In which the current transformer's alternating current to be metered is conducted to the output branch of the primary current conductor, from which it circulates through the current loop and returns along the return branch, after which the alternating current is conducted to a consumption target. Whereby the alternating current passing through the current loop generates a magnetic field, this magnetic field causes the at least one gradiometer of at least the second order to generate a voltage signal to be metered. Wherein the output branch, the return branch of the at least one primary current conductor and the current loop connecting them are formed in one and the same conducting layer of a printed circuit board, in such a way that in between the one primary current conductor and the at least one gradiometer of at least the second order there is at least one conducting layer forming a static shield between the primary circuit and the secondary circuit.
