A method for identifying substances that bind AILIM (activation inducible lymphocyte immunomodulatory molecule) or AILIM ligand comprises the following steps: (a) preparing an insoluble carrier on which a polypeptide comprising an extracellular region of AILIM is immobilised; (b) preparing a labelled polypeptide comprising a polypeptide comprising an extracellular region of AILIM ligand labelled with a labelling material that emits a detectable signal; (c) reacting the insoluble carrier in process (a) with the labelled polypeptide in process (b); (d) reacting the insoluble carrier in process (a), the labelled polypeptide of process (b) and the substance to each other in any arbitrary order; (e) detecting the signal emitted from the labelling material contained in the complex produced in process (c), and the signal emitted from the labelling material contained in the complex produced in process (d), respectively; and (f) comparing the magnitude of each of the signals detected in process (e).
