A bioreactor comprising a composition of an enriched population of human liver progenitors their progeny, or more mature forms of said human liver progenitors which exhibit one or more markers indicative of expression of full-length alpha-fetoprotein, full length albumin or both and at least one compartment having culture medium. Such a bioreactor is particularly useful as an artificial liver.
