<p><PICT:0861278/III/1> Articles are coated by spraying substances on them by a propellant gas stream produced by an explosion or a detonation, the substances being atomized and introduced into the propellant gas streams by a primary gas stream (e.g. from a conventional spray gun 5) or by an arc between electrodes made of, or containing, the coating substance. The combustion chamber 10 receives its gases from sources 15, 16 through non-return valves 22, filters 21 and flame traps 19, the mixture being ignited by a sparking plug 17 energized by the discharge of a capacitor 33 through neon 39. The spray gun 5 may incorporate a high-frequency heating coil as disclosed in Specifications 483,517, 568,640, 568,641 or 607,654.</p> |
