[Also in Group XIII] A plant for calcining and sintering cement or other carbonates comprises a rotary kiln 7, the exhaust gases from which are utilized to preheat the cement by flowing in cross-current through the cement on an inclined grate 3 of ceramic material and in counter-current through the cement in a pre-heating chamber 1 from whence the gases are withdrawn through a pipe 10. The cement is heated approximately to its decarbonization temperature (750‹ to 800‹ C.) in the chamber by the gases which are introduced thereto at a temperature between 850‹ and 900‹ C. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the grate may be omitted and a crosscurrent preheating chamber in the form of a shaft is utilized.</p> |
