PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a user-friendly document retrieval system allowing rapid retrieval by use of a personal index narrowed down to a range having a high retrieval frequency to a user, and allowing a free change of the index, differently from an inconvenient conventional document retrieval system having a common index not including a range and description contents easy to retrieve to the user. SOLUTION: In this document retrieval system, a document server 2 has a master index (MI) including a description item for specifying a document name inside a document DB 3, extracts a part of the description items of the MI as a personal index (PI) by an instruction from a client 5, stores it into a PI table 22 with it correlated with the description item of the MI, performs keyword research for the description item inside the PI by an instruction from the client 5, refers to the MI corresponding to the corresponding description item, specifies a document name, displays it in a list, and outputs for display of data on the selected document to the client 5.
