PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize spray according to respective combustion processes in a compressing stroke and an air intake stroke with a simple structure. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine comprises a fuel injection valve 7 for injecting fuel directly into a combustion chamber from the rim section of a cylinder toward the center line of the cylinder and diagonally downward, and an ignition plug 6 disposed in a substantial center of the cylinder. The tip of the fuel injection valve 7 is provided with injection ports 72a and 72b for performing sprays where the sectional shape orthogonal to the injection direction is a widening shape from the center side of the combustion chamber toward the sidewall surface side (specifically, the sprays are sprays Ja and Jb of truncated chevron shape where the center side of the combustion chamber is narrow and the sidewall surface side is wide).
