PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thickening agent for surfactants expressing an excellent thickening effect on surfactants, in particular to acylamino acid type anionic surfactants or alkyliminodicarboxylate type amphoteric surfactants, and to provide a detergent composition containing the same and excellent in quality of foams and free from slimy feeling. SOLUTION: The thickening agent for surfactant is expressed by general formula (1): R<SP>1</SP>O(EO)<SB>x</SB>(BO)<SB>y</SB>(EO)<SB>z</SB>H. In the formula, R<SP>1</SP>is a group selected from an 8-14C alkyl group, an alkenyl group or an acyl group, EO is an ethylene oxide group, BO is a butylene oxide group, x, y or z are each an average addition mole number and 0≤x≤3, 1≤y≤3, 0≤z≤3 and 0≤x+z≤3.
