PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction material with improved fade characteristics and a decreased environmental load. SOLUTION: The objective friction material is prepared by compounding a friction material comprising a fibrous base material, a friction adjusting material, a binder, and an inorganic filler with a particulate composite material prepared by grinding a waste friction material or with the particulate composite material and a baked bone meal. Preferably, the particulate composite material is prepared by thermally treating a waste friction material at 600°C or higher to remove organic components, followed by grinding; and the particulate composite material is compounded in an amount of at least 10 vol.%, and the baked bone mill, in an amount of at least 3 vol.%, based on the total amount of the objective friction material.
