<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical transmitter in which, when a temperature of a peripheral environment of a light emitting element is high, the feature degradation of the light emitting element caused by relief vibration can be suppressed. <P>SOLUTION: In the optical transmitter, a semiconductor laser 3 is subjected to light intensity modulation by direct modulation, to transmit signal light. The optical transmitter comprises an average drive current control circuit 7 in which, if an environmental temperature near that of the semiconductor laser 3 increases relative to the semiconductor laser 3, the average light power of the semiconductor laser 3 is increased.
