<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a projection display device uniform in brightness and excellent in image quality. <P>SOLUTION: The projection display device is almost composed of a polarizing illuminator 100, a polarizing beam splitter 200, a reflection type liquid crystal element 300, and a projection optical system 600. A condensing lens 400 is arranged between the illuminator 100 and the beam splitter 200. After the light emitted from a light source part 110 is split to a plurality of intermediate beams by a 1st optical element 120, it is superposed on the element 300 through the lens 400. By such a projection type display device, irregular illuminance to the reflection type liquid crystal element being an area to be illuminated is reduced, and the projected image having the uniform brightness and good quality is obtained.
