PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device and a projector for suppressing the disturbance of a waveform of a high voltage pulse fed to the discharge lamp for starting discharge. SOLUTION: When a discharge gap 210 discharges stored electric charge of a capacitor 208, the discharge current flows into a primary winding W11 of a transformer 211, a voltage corresponding to the current on the winding W11 is generated on secondary windings W21, W22 of the transformer 211 to be applied to a discharge lamp 2 as a pulse voltage for starting the discharge. At this time, a resonance current from the winding W11 to charge the capacitor 208 with an inverse polarity at the time of discharge is back-flowed to the winding W11 though a passage bypassing the capacitor 208 by a diode 209. Therefore, vibrations of a voltage and a current caused by a resonance are suppressed and the disturbance of the waveform of the high voltage pulse generated on the windings W21, W22 of the transformer 211 is decreased.
