PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve disadvantages of an HDD to be incorporated in or externally attached to a PC, a server or the like, such that when purchase of a new HDD is needed due to an insufficient data area, it is difficult to easily add the HDD, particularly, in the built-in type, because the expandable space is limited, and it is necessary to secure power supply also in the external type. SOLUTION: To solve such a problem, when the data area is insufficient, an authentication key is purchased from a vender and downloaded to the HDD, and it is collated with a cipher key stored in a ROM. When the collation is rightly performed, the access to a magnetic storage medium data area to which the access was not permitted is permitted, and the capacity of the HDD can be thus automatically expanded.
