PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device equipped with vertical alignment layers in which decomposition or the like hardly occurs even when light with high intensity is used as incident light. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device has a liquid crystal layer 104 comprising a liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy interposed between a pair of substrates 101, 102. The vertical alignment layers 115, 125 respectively composed of an inorganic material, having a pretilt in a specified azimuth angle direction and showing a vertically aligning property are formed on the liquid crystal layer 104 sides of the pair of substrates 101, 102. The respective vertical alignment layers 115, 125 are characterized by being disposed so as to make their azimuth angle directions mutually form at an angle of 90-100°. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
