PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming device and a recording head control method that protect the recording face of the recording head and a recording element at the time when an abnormality occurs. SOLUTION: The recording head 50 is composed of seven recording heads corresponding to seven colors and each head is provided with a recording paper detection sensor 51 in the upstream side of the recording paper transfer direction and a recording paper detection sensor 52 in the downstream side. The presence of the recording paper 16 in a printing position and the positions of the leading edge and rear edge can be detected by using the sensors 51 and 52. When a jam occurs and the transfer of the recording paper 16 is suspended, the position of the recording paper 16 is detected by using the sensors 51 and 52, and in accordance with the position of the recording paper 16 detected, the heads 50A, 50B, 50C and 50D are withdrawn from the printing position to a prescribed withdrawal position. On the other hand, the heads 50E, 50F and 50G not withdrawn are covered with a cap 53 to prevent the ink in the nozzles from getting thickened. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
