PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent occurrence of a serious accident by reliably stopping a slide at a predetermined position during the runaway of a servo motor in an electric servo press. SOLUTION: A runaway monitoring device comprises a pulse coder 40 to detect the press speed at every predetermined time after inputting the deceleration stop command signal to a servo motor 21, a determination means to determine whether or not the press speed detected by the pulse coder 40 exceeds the predetermined value, and a mechanical brake 46 to mechanically brake a servo press when the determination means determines that the press speed exceeds the set value.
