PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the deterioration of picture quality in a retouching where image processing for dealing with image data as 16 bit gradation and image processing for dealing with image data as 8 bit gradation are mixed. SOLUTION: A processing menu column MN is displayed with buttons BT2 and BT3 of "pre-retouch process" and "post-retouch process" being arranged from top down while showing the order of the retouch procedures. In the pre-retouch process, image processing corresponding to 16 bit color such as "brightness adjustment" and "contrast adjustment" is included. In the post-retouch process, image processing corresponding to 8 bit color such as "unsharp mask" and "lighting" is included. The image processing included in the pre-retouch process is executed to the input image data, and then when the button BT2 of the "pre-retouch process" is clicked in order to execute the image processing included in the pre-retouch process, a message box describing that it is impossible to return to the preceding process is displayed, and the execution of the image processing included in the preceding process is inhibited.
