PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus and a process cartridge in which, when a protective substance is supplied to at least the discharge area of the surface of a charged body in order to prevent the deterioration of the charged body, such as a photoreceptor, due to discharge, the protective substance is reduced in diameter and sufficiently spread while excess supply of the protective substance is prevented, thereby the charged body is sufficiently protected and uniformly coated with the smallest amount of protective substance necessary to be supplied. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus, an auxiliary applying means 10 for further reducing the particle diameter of the protective substance applied by a protective substance application means and for uniformly spreading the substance is disposed downstream of a protective substance application means 9 and upstream of a charging means 2 in the direction of the movement of the charged body.
