PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for working a glass rod for optical fiber in which it is needless that operators control the quantity of a gas for a burner or the moving speed of a movable chuck staying with the apparatus all the time and a method of narrowing down the end part of the glass rod. SOLUTION: The apparatus for working the glass rod for optical fiber has the movable chucks 5 which hold both ends of the glass rod 4 and one of which is movable in the axial direction of the glass rod 4, a rotary mechanism for rotating the glass rod, a burner 6 for heating the glass rod, a movement mechanism of the burner, a gas control mechanism 13 for controlling the quantity of a gas to be supplied to the burner, an imaging unit 7 for photographing a heating part, an image processing unit for determining the shape of a diameter reducing part where the diameter is reduced, the brightness distribution and the diameter of a most fine diameter part by processing the resultant image information and a control computer for controlling the moving speed of the burner, the quantity of the gas and the moving speed of the movable chuck based on the information determined from the image processing unit.
