A coating composition useful for building materials products, especially roofing surfaces, is provided. The coating composition provides durable exterior protection to surfaces that it applied to, and it has intumescent and reflective properties. The caoting composition includes a mixture of a polymeric binder, at least one intumescent agent, a polymeric carrier and a pigment. The pigment is present in the coating composition in amount that is capable of providing a coating that has an initial energy efficiency rating greater than or equal to 0.65 for a low-sloped roof, or an initial energy efficiency greater than or aqual to 0.25 for a steep-sloped roof.
