PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which 2- or 3-pyridinemethanol can selectively be extracted from a reaction mixture obtained by catalytically reducing 2- or 3-cyanopyridine in an acidic aqueous solution and containing the 2- or 3-pyridinemethanol, and the high-purity 2- or 3-pyridinemethanol is easily produced by a distillation operation following the extraction. SOLUTION: The extraction treatment is carried out within a pH range of 7.0-8.0 when producing the 2- or 3-pyridinemethanol by adding an organic solvent to the reaction mixture obtained by catalytically reducing the 2- or 3-cyanopyridine in the acidic aqueous solution, and containing the 2- or 3-pyridinemethanol, and carrying out the extraction treatment.
