PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a moisture detecting unit for avoiding an influence from its structure and surrounding soil and acquiring a stable measurement value of soil moisture. SOLUTION: The moisture detecting unit is provided with a measuring unit body 1, a ceramic element 4 incorporated into the measuring unit body 1, and a pair of electrodes 5a, 6a disposed on both sides of the ceramic element 4 and facing each other. An area of the ceramic element 4 contacting a pair of the electrodes 5a, 6a is larger than areas of a pair of the electrodes 5a, 6a contacting the ceramic element 4. An end face of the ceramic element 4 is exposed to an end face of the measuring unit body 1 inserted into the soil. The moisture detecting unit is also provided with a moisture measuring element 3 sealed with a sealant 8 and a measurement processing circuit 11 for processing an output signal from the moisture measuring element 3 and measuring the moisture in the soil.
