摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an observation optical system which efficiently suppresses eccentricity aberration and chromatic aberration, having a good image-forming performance, using a HOE from which high resolution is obtained. SOLUTION: The observation optical system has an incident plane, a reflecting surface, and an light exit surface, and at least one surface 3<SB>2</SB>of these is a free curved surface, and a volume type holographic optical element (HOE) 4 is closely stuck to the free curved surface. Following conditional expression is satisfied. That is, -0.20<ϕx/Px<0.30, -0.20<ϕy/Py<0.20, whereinϕx is power of only the HOE in the direction of x at the intersection of the principal ray and HOE surface in the axis;ϕy is power of only the HOE in the direction of y (the direction parallel to the eccentricity) at the intersection of the principal ray and HOE surface in the axis; Px is power of the whole observation optical system in the direction of x; and Py is power of the whole observation optical system in the direction of y.
