PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a hygroscopic conjugate fiber having excellent hygroscopicity, causing no outer layer cracking even under high-temperature wetting conditions in scouring, dyeing, etc., and having excellent dimensional stability in the fiber axis direction in water absorption. SOLUTION: The hygroscopic conjugate fiber is a conjugate fiber having a fiber crosssectional shape composed of three layers in which a non-water swellable elastomer is arranged in the outer layer, a water-swellable polymer in the intermediate layer and a non-water swellable polymer having no elasticity in the inner layer.
